Estimating Time: Comparing the Accuracy of Estimation Methods for Interval Timing

In interval timing experiments, motor reproduction is the predominant method used when participants are asked to estimate an interval. However, it unknown how its accuracy, precision and efficiency compare alternative methods, such as indicating duration by spatial estimation on a timeline. two we compared different methods. first experiment, were reproduce means of reproduction, timeline estimation, or verbal estimation. We found that, average, estimates more accurate precise than line reproductions. bias towards familiar whole second units giving estimates. Motor reproductions precise, but not complex task: Participants presented stream digits one target letter subsequently both onset total that accurate, had lowest reaction times. Overall, our results suggest transformation time into space has only relatively minor cost. addition, they show each comes with own advantages, choice depends choices in experimental design: for example, using durations integer superior, yet testing long durations, intensive making sensible choice.
